Siliguri, 09th September: In a significant breakthrough, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police’s Cyber Crime Team has successfully recovered ₹25 lakh, that was fraudulently obtained from a retired employee. Significantly, the money was returned to its rightful owner, a retired government employee from Haider Para.
According to reports, on August 19, the fraud victim received a phone call on WhatsApp from an unknown number. The caller identified himself as an officer from the Mumbai Crime Branch and threatened the victim with a drug-related case, claiming that there was a warrant for his arrest. The caller then demanded ₹25 lakh to settle the matter.
Consequently, the retired employee fell victim to the scam and transferred ₹25 lakh to the bank account provided by the scammer. Later, when he contacted his bank he realized he had been defrauded. Following this, he filed a written complaint at the cyber police station.
Based on the complaint, the Siliguri Cyber Crime Team conducted an investigation and successfully recovered the defrauded amount within a month. The recovered money was promptly returned to the retired employee. The victim expressed his gratitude to the Cyber Crime Team for their prompt action and successful recovery of his funds.
