‘Shaheed Diwas’ observed by Sahudangi Shaheed Bedi Committee

Rajganj, 25th January: The Sahudangi Shaheed Bedi Committee commemorated Martyrs’ Day in honor of the martyrs of the Kamtapuri state and language movement.

Jagadish Chandra Roy and Gajan Roy, who sacrificed their lives for the movement, were remembered during the event. On Saturday, Jalpaiguri MP Jayanta Kumar Roy paid tribute by laying wreaths at the Shaheed Bedi at Sahudangi More and Jagadish Colony in the Rajganj block.

As per the committee, the tragic incident occurred on January 25, 1987, when a ‘Rail Roko’ campaign was organized at Altagram railway station to demand Kamtapuri statehood and language recognition.

The protest turned violent when the protestors were fired upon, leading to the deaths of Jagadish Chandra Roy of Sahudangi and Gajan Roy of Dhupguri. Since then, January 25 is observed annually as Martyrs’ Day.

The event was attended by Rajesh Roy, Sanjay Roy, Sudhir Sarkar, Swadhin Roy, Tarun Roy, Ajit Roy, and several others.
