Siliguri, 12th March: The Darjeeling district committee of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest outside the SDO office in Siliguri on Thursday, raising several demands related to students’ issues.
The demonstration was organized highlighting various problems faced by students. Protesters demanded improvement in infrastructure at government schools and called for an end to the collection of additional fees.
During the protest, the demonstrators also demanded the introduction of special government scholarships and stipends for students from tea garden areas.
Members of the organisation further demanded special concessions in public transport for students. They alleged that the rising cost of travel is making it difficult for many students to attend school regularly.
According to sources, when the protesters attempted to enter the SDO office, they faced resistance from the police. It was alleged that the gate of the office was closed and they were prevented from entering, following which the SFI members staged a sit-in protest in front of the office.
