Security measures questioned as newborn reportedly stolen from NBMCH, superintendent assures to set up inquiry committee

Siliguri, 20th April: A woman has been allegedly accused of stealing a newborn from the maternity ward of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) causing a stir at the campus.


Reportedly, Ranjita Singh (24), a resident of Kharibari gave birth to a son at Kharibari Rural Hospital. However, due to deteriorating health, the infant was referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. According to Ranjita, today while having lunch a woman came forward with a helping hand and offered to hold the baby, but the next moment the woman disappeared with the baby. The matter was immediately reported to the NBMCH authorities.

Upon receiving the news, the Superintendent of NBMCH along with police from the Medical Outpost reached the spot. While police started investigating the matter by questioning and also analyzing the CCTV footage, On the other hand, Superintendent Dr Sanjay Mallick assured of setting up an inquiry committee with regard to this incident. He further said that due to visiting hours during the time, outsiders had come to the hospital, thereby making it impossible to ascertain the identity of the accused woman. The entire incident is under police investigation.
