Darjeeling, 02nd September: The director of a school in Darjeeling has been apprehended by the Darjeeling police in the wake of a heartbreaking incident involving the suicide of a 9th-grade student. The boy’s family lodged a complaint on Friday evening, alleging that their 16-year-old son took his own life due to immense pressure exerted by the school to sell raffle tickets.
According to the family, the school assigned the boy the task of selling four raffle sheets, which proved challenging given their financial circumstances. The boy hailed from a low-income family, and his father supported the family, including his wife and two sons, by rearing cattle. Although the boy managed to sell one raffle sheet within the village, his elder brother sought assistance from others to sell the remaining sheets. Left with unsold raffle tickets and no funds, the boy took the remaining sheets back to school.
Allegedly, the school not only sent him home on multiple occasions due to the unsold raffle tickets but also subjected him to harassment and humiliation within the school premises. In a devastating turn of events, the young boy tragically took his own life by hanging himself in his school uniform shortly after returning home from school.
