Siliguri, 03rd February: In a shocking turn of events, a Saraswati idol was recovered in a damaged state hours after being robbed from the pavilion. The incident led to widespread commotion in the Majhabari area of the Dabgram-Fulbari 2 block.
According to reports, the residents of the area organized a Saraswati Puja on the previous day, following all traditional rituals. Later that night, a group of young men consumed alcohol near the pandal. Meanwhile, one of them, identified as Amar Das, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, trespassed into the pavilion and tried to steal the idol.
When the residents spotted the youth and attempted to stop him, the accused allegedly threw stones at their houses, vandalized the lights at the pavilion, and carried the idol to his house.
On Monday morning, the residents filed a written complaint at the Ashighar police station. Based on the complaint, the police visited the accuser’s house, where they found the statue in a broken condition. The accused, however, has reportedly gone into hiding.
Meanwhile, the Panchayat head arrived at the scene, and the police initiated an investigation into the entire incident.
