Siliguri, 19th November: A worker suffered severe injuries after falling from the under-construction flyover on the Balason–Salugara four-lane elevated road project, marking the second such incident within a month and raising serious concerns over the construction company’s safety standards.
According to initial reports, the worker slipped while working atop pillar number 51 and fell from the structure. Fellow workers rushed to the spot and first took him to the district hospital. Owing to his critical condition, he was immediately referred to a private hospital in Matigara, where doctors described his condition as extremely serious.
Eyewitnesses stated that the injured worker was not wearing a helmet at the time of the fall. They also noted that many labourers are often seen working without safety belts, highlighting serious lapses in safety compliance at the construction site.
Police have begun a formal investigation into the incident, including a review of safety arrangements and protocols at the construction site. Meanwhile, the construction company has not issued any official statement regarding the accident, its cause, or the safety measures in place.
