Rajganj, 20th May: The residents of several villages of Rajganj are facing water problems despite the establishment of water reserves aimed at resolving water scarcity. After a brief period of water availability, the reserves have once again ceased functioning, exacerbating the plight of residents.
Earlier, a drinking water initiative under the Sajal Dhara Project was launched during the CPI(M) government’s tenure in Sahudangi, under the jurisdiction of Binnaguri Gram Panchayat in Rajganj block. This project led to the establishment of multiple small water reserves to deliver piped, arsenic-free drinking water to areas including Sahudangi, Ashrampara, Chhatarpara, Telanipara, and Nawapara. However, after a short durration of operations, the project came to a halt, leaving the residents in distress.
Local residents expressed frustration over the abrupt cessation of water supply, highlighting the challenges they face in accessing clean water. Many have resorted to purchasing water, further burdening their already strained resources. They emphasized the urgent need for the water project to resume operations or for alternative water supply solutions to be implemented in the area.
In response to the situation, Samijuddin Ahmed, the Pradhan of Binnaguri Gram Panchayat, stated that they were previously unaware of the closure of the water project. However, upon receiving information about the issue, immediate measures will be taken to address the situation and explore options for reinstating the water project.
