Siliguri, 23rd December: Residents of Central Shanti Nagar area under Dabgram-Fulbari blocked the road in protest against several problems of road and drainage.
The locals alleged that during the rainy season the dirty water of the drains enters the houses. Despite such ordeals, the drains are not being cleaned. Even after informing the said matter to Panchayat Pradhan, no solution or efforts are made. Meanwhile, due to the accumulation of dirty water in the drains, the outbreak of mosquitoes increases making it prone to several vector-borne diseases. Also, the people of the area are suffering from various diseases, and thus, they participated in the road protest today.
On the other hand, soon after getting the information about the incident, the police of Ashighar Out Post reached the spot. The situation was brought under control after the intervention of the police. In this regard, the local Panchayat Ranjit Roy said that TMC Panchayat Pradhan and SJDA can arrange solid waste management in the area if they want. There have been repeated complaints about the cleaning of the drain but no such service is provided to the residents.
At the same time, Pradhan Sudha Singh Chatterjee said that the central government has stopped work for 100 days and she is unaware of the central government’s plan to clean the drains for the next 100 days. Furthermore, she added that people are responsible for environmental pollution and dirty waste, and awareness camps have been organized many times regarding cleanliness.
