Siliguri, 24th February: Renowned table tennis coach Bharati Ghosh passed away in Siliguri at the age of 83. She had been suffering from age-related ailments for several days.
Last week, Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb visited her residence in Deshbandhu Para. Following this, she was admitted to a nursing home in Matigara, where she passed away at around 12:20 p.m. on Monday.
Bharati Ghosh was a respected figure in the table tennis world. Arjuna Awardee Mantu Ghosh trained under her guidance, along with many other young players. She was honored with the Banga Ratna award in 2019 by the state government and received the ‘Sports Guru’ award from the Sports Department in 2021.
She had suffered a cerebral stroke a year and a half ago but had recovered and resumed her normal life. However, she had been unwell for some time and was admitted to a nursing home last week. Her condition worsened due to infections in various parts of her body.
The news of her passing has cast a shadow of grief over the sports community in Siliguri.
