Siliguri, 01st August: In a significant development, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police and Siliguri Municipal Corporation have addressed the long-standing issue of e-rickshaws in the city. As of today, August 1, unregistered e-rickshaws have been banned, and measures are being implemented to regulate the movement of registered e-rickshaws.
According to reports, the traffic police will now oversee approximately 5,000 registered e-rickshaws. The Siliguri Metropolitan Police will assign specific routes to these e-rickshaws, with each vehicle designated a particular path within the city. To enforce this, registered e-rickshaws will be marked with distinctive colours to prevent them from straying onto unauthorized routes. Additionally, the movement of registered e-rickshaws on national highways has been prohibited starting today.
The traffic police have begun distributing new guidelines to both registered and unregistered e-rickshaws. The police have indicated that today serves as a grace period, with enforcement of the new directives set to begin on Friday. Violators of the new regulations will face action.
