Rajganj cement factory issues two-month closure notice, workers stage protest

Rajganj, 16th June: Tension prevailed in Rajganj after Karatoya Cement Factory issued a notice announcing a two-month closure, leaving around 80 workers shocked and uncertain about their future. In response, members of the Trinamool-affiliated workers’ organization INTTUC staged a protest in front of the factory gate on Monday.

The demonstration was led by INTTUC Jalpaiguri District President Tapan Dey, Rajganj Block President Soleman Mohammad, and Panchayat Pradhan Sumit Dutta. The protesting workers expressed their anger over the sudden decision and demanded urgent intervention.

According to reports, the factory has been operational for several years and had been producing cement under contract for a reputed cement brand. The notice stated that the closure was due to the termination of the commercial agreement by the business partner.

The workers, including both permanent and temporary staff, have refused to accept the decision. INTTUC leaders said the factory initially operated independently but later shifted to contract manufacturing. They argued that the sudden shutdown has pushed many families into crisis.

District President Tapan Dey demanded that the factory management provide at least two months of financial support to the affected workers. He also said the issue would be taken up with the Jalpaiguri Deputy Labor Commissioner.
