Kolkata, 20th January: In a high-profile ruling, Sanjay Roy has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Sealdah Court in Kolkata for the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Sealdah, Anirban Das, stated that while the crime was heinous, it did not meet the criteria for a “rarest of rare” case, and thus awarded a life sentence rather than the death penalty.
Roy, who had been employed at the hospital, was convicted for the sexual assault and brutal murder of a young doctor at the medical college, in a case that had shocked both the medical community and the country. The crime occurred in 2024, and after a long and contentious trial, the court has now rendered its decision.
The R.G. Kar case has sparked widespread debate about the governance of state-run healthcare institutions, with people calling for more stringent oversight and accountability measures.
