Siliguri, 07th August: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation faced significant resistance during an anti-encroachment drive at Jalpai More on Wednesday. The Corporation aimed to demolish shops built atop a high drainage in the area, but their efforts were thwarted by the Jalpai More Byabsayee Samiti, the local businessmen’s committee.
The committee demanded that any demolition should be preceded by discussions with them and arrangements for the rehabilitation of affected shop owners. Local residents joined the protest, blocking the Municipal Corporation’s JCB and holding posters.
The protest compelled Municipal Corporation employees to halt the drive. Meanwhile, the Mayor, who was passing through Jalpai More during the protest, instructed officials to remove the shops encroaching on the road and drain.
