Siliguri, 17th August: A demonstration was held in front of the Siliguri Police Commissionerate by members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), and the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) to protest the gang-rape of a minor girl. The protesters called for stringent punishment for the perpetrators of the crime.
On Saturday, the protestors marched to the Police Commissionerate but were halted at the gate by police personnel. This led to a clash between the demonstrators and the police. Subsequently, a delegation of six members was allowed to meet with the police commissioner.
The delegation demanded rigorous action against the accused and stressed the need for enhanced measures to ensure women’s safety.
