Protest at Rajganj BDO office over multiple demands, march halted by police

Rajganj, 30th January: A joint platform of left-leaning mass organisations staged a protest at the Rajganj BDO office on Friday, demanding an end to harassment of citizens in the name of SIR and pressing for multiple other issues.

The protest began with a march from Rajganj Thana More, moving towards the BDO office. As the procession reached the office, a large contingent of Rajganj police stopped the demonstrators. In response, the protesters sat on the Fatapukur-Rajganj state road adjacent to the office and began demonstrating, temporarily disrupting traffic on the state road. The protest was withdrawn without submitting a memorandum.

Protesters demanded the immediate cessation of harassment of citizens under the pretext of SIR, regular implementation of the 100-day work programme, guaranteed minimum wages for tea garden workers, and the repeal of the labour code.

Additional demands included establishing employment-oriented industries in Rajganj, reopening the long-shut SSK and MSK units, starting a science department at Rajganj College, and filling all vacant posts in schools immediately.

The joint platform warned that they would return in larger numbers in the coming days to submit their memorandum at the BDO office.
