Procession taken out in Naxalbari on the occasion of Muharram

Naxalbari, 29th July: On the occasion of the holy Muharram, the Muslim community in Naxalbari came together to hold a solemn procession. Among the attendees was Arun Ghosh, the Sabhadhipati of Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad.


Notably, Muharram processions are carried out from various locations in Naxalbari. As part of the rally, mock stick fights (Lathi Khela) are performed at different intersections to pay tribute and mourn the death of Imam Hussein Ali. To ensure safety and prevent any untoward incidents, a substantial contingent of police forces, including Additional Superintendent of Police Manoranjan Ghosh of Darjeeling District Police, was present during the event.

On this day, Sabhadhipati Arun Ghosh emphasized that while people may follow different religions, festivals belong to all and should be respected. Muharram was observed with religious fervor and adherence to customs. Notably, 16 teams were scheduled to participate in the Lathi Khela, a significant aspect of the Muharram commemoration.
