‘Poush Sankranti’ draws large crowds in Siliguri markets

Siliguri, 13th January: The onset of ‘Poush Sankranti’ has brought a festive atmosphere to Siliguri, with residents flocking to local markets in large numbers. Traditionally celebrated with rice-based delicacies such as pithe and puli, the festival sees households preparing these treats, creating a surge in demand for essential ingredients.

In earlier times, families ground rice at home to make bhapa pithe, patishapta, dudh puli, and other traditional items. However, with changing lifestyles and busy schedules, many now prefer to buy ready-made rice flour from local markets.

Markets across Siliguri, including Hakimpara and Bidhan Market, have seen temporary stalls set up specifically to sell rice flour and other festival essentials. Both men and women vendors are actively engaged, managing the increasing footfall of buyers.

Vendors report that demand for rice flour and other ingredients peaks during ‘Poush Sankranti’ each year. Working families, in particular, favor buying prepared flour over traditional home preparation, boosting sales and income for local sellers during the festival period.
