Siliguri, 09th March: The voting process for the formation of the new committee of the Bar Council of West Bengal began at the Siliguri court premises on Monday along with other parts of the state. The voting will continue for two days.
This year, a total of 75 candidates are contesting in the election. From the Siliguri Bar Association, five candidates are in the fray including representatives backed by Congress, BJP, Trinamool Congress, CPI(M) and an independent candidate.
From the Siliguri Bar Association, Arun Kumar Sarkar backed by Trinamool Congress, Nantu Pal backed by BJP, Alokesh Chakraborty backed by Congress, Kalyan Saha and Subrata Sarkar backed by CPI(M) are trying their luck in the election.
On the first day of voting, Siliguri Municipal Corporation Mayor Gautam Deb and Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar cast their votes.
Former secretary of the Siliguri Bar Association Alok Dhara said that this is an election for the entire Bar Council of West Bengal and through this process the new committee of the council will be formed.
He informed that a total of 75 candidates are contesting in the election, out of which 23 candidates will be elected. These 23 elected members will together form the new committee.
He further said that voting in this election is conducted on an individual basis and not on party symbols. Five members from the Siliguri Bar Council are contesting in this election.
There are around 2,900 voters in the Siliguri Bar Council. After the counting of votes, the winning candidates will be announced and the elected members will then form the new committee.
Meanwhile, Mayor Gautam Deb said that he also cast his vote in the Bar Council of West Bengal election and added that he is a member of the Siliguri Bar Council.
