Political tension rises in Siliguri as Mayor and MLA exchange allegations

Siliguri, 22nd November: With Assembly elections approaching, political tension is on the rise in Siliguri as Mayor Gautam Deb and MLA Shankar Ghosh continue to exchange sharp allegations, stirring heated discussions in the city’s political circles.

Two days ago, MLA Shankar Ghosh held a press conference in Siliguri, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the municipal corporation. He alleged that despite repeated allocations from the MLA fund, the corporation has not carried out the necessary development works. As a result, several key projects remain stalled, leaving funds meant for public welfare unused. He further claimed that the mayor is deliberately obstructing the process.

Within 24 hours, Mayor Gautam Deb responded in a counter press conference, accusing the MLA of spreading misinformation. The Mayor stated that Ghosh was selectively allocating funds to projects that the government had already initiated long ago. He alleged that the MLA was misleading the public by giving incorrect explanations.

On Saturday, MLA Shankar Ghosh again addressed the media at Siliguri Journalist Club. He asserted that the Mayor’s claims were completely false. He alleged that in areas where funds were already allocated from the MLA quota, the Mayor was forcibly bringing in fresh allocations from other departments, rendering the MLA fund meaningless.

These back-and-forth accusations between the mayor and the MLA have intensified political discussions across Siliguri.
