Police launch crackdown in Siliguri after MP Raju Bista’s warning over illegal sand mining

Siliguri, 20th November: Siliguri Metropolitan Police has stepped up action against sand mafia in Balasan River after Darjeeling MP Raju Bista raised serious allegations against the administration two days ago. Bista had questioned how illegal mining was taking place at Matigara and accused officials of allowing the activity in collaboration with the sand mafia. He warned that if strict steps were not taken to stop the illegal extraction, a strong agitation would follow.

Within 48 hours of his statement, the intelligence wing of Siliguri Metropolitan Police launched a late-night operation and seized six dumpers allegedly transporting illegally mined sand without royalty under the cover of darkness. Six drivers were arrested in the case and presented before Siliguri court today.

Police sources said that similar operations will continue to stop illegal river mining and strict action will be taken against those involved in the racket.
