Police bust drug ring smuggling brown sugar worth Rs 60 lakhs in Panitanki, three arrested

Siliguri, 17th October: In a major operation, the Kharibari police successfully exposed a drug trafficking ring and seized a significant amount of brown sugar worth lakhs of rupees. The operation resulted in the arrest of three smugglers identified as Bimal Ghosh (39), Biswajit Dey (30) from Naxalbari, and Yusuf Sekh (40), a resident of Lalgola in Murshidabad.


According to police sources, on Monday night, police raided the Prasadu Jote area located near Panitanki of Kharibari based on a tip-off. Upon being alerted, the traffickers attempted to evade the police but failed.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused smugglers were carrying the contraband in their pockets. The recovered brown sugar weighed about 609 grams with an estimated market value of Rs. 60 lakhs. Following this, on Tuesday, the accused criminals were produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court while the police are further investigating the incident.
