Siliguri, 20th July: The incessant thefts of motorcycles around the parking lot of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) in Kharibari had kept the police on edge. Concerns were rising about security measures at the hospital and the role of the police in curbing such incidents. Eventually, the police adopted a new strategy and went undercover as civilians to monitor the situation.
This strategy proved effective as on Friday night, the police successfully apprehended two members of a bike theft gang, identified as Sanju Das (26) from Bhola More of NJP and Dheeraj Kumar Ram (42) from Bihar. Along with them, a receiver, Shahid Alam, involved in purchasing stolen bikes was also arrested.
As per the details gathered, both Sanju and Dheeraj have a record of criminal activities. During police interrogation, Sanju confessed to selling a stolen bike from the NBMCH premises to Shahid Alam of Maynaguri on June 6. Based on his statement, police conducted an operation in Maynaguri last night, apprehending Shahid Alam and seizing the stolen bike.
Further investigation revealed that Dheeraj Kumar Ram would arrive from Bihar steal a two-wheeler from the NBMCH area and abscond. He had previously committed a theft on the 10th of July recently. On Saturday, all three accused – Sanju Das, Dheeraj Kumar Ram, and Shahid Alam, were presented before the Siliguri court for remand. Police have initiated further inquiries into the criminal operations of the bike theft gang.
