Overnight rains trigger major landslides in Darjeeling, one dead

Darjeeling, 03rd October: Overnight rainfall has caused multiple landslides in various areas of Darjeeling, resulting in one death. The deceased, identified as 78-year-old Raghubeer Rai from Sukhia Block, was caught in a landslide. The landslides occurred on Darjeeling-Singtam Road and Rock Garden Road, leading to the complete closure of traffic on the route towards Rock Garden since Thursday morning.


Following the incident, the local Block Development Officer (BDO) and police officials arrived at the village to assess the situation. According to administrative sources, the family of the deceased will be provided financial compensation as per government regulations.

Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts on Thursday. The water level in the Teesta River is also rising, causing the road in Chamakdangi village to be inundated. A new embankment is currently being constructed along the banks of the Teesta River to mitigate flooding risks.
