Siliguri, 26th January: The DRI Siliguri unit successfully apprehended a smuggler with six gold biscuits worth several lakhs near the Husludanga Toll Plaza in Maynaguri. The arrested individual, identified as Matiyar Miya (50), a resident of Cooch Behar, was caught with the smuggled gold.
The DRI received a tip-off about a gold smuggling operation from the Indo-Bangladesh border via Cooch Behar to Siliguri. Subsequently, the DRI team set up an operation and detained Matiyar Miya, from a passenger bus. Upon searching him, six gold biscuits weighing 696 grams were recovered from his undergarments. The total value of the recovered gold is estimated at ₹56.09 lakhs.
Matiyar Miya was presented in the Siliguri court on Sunday, and the DRI is continuing its investigation into the matter.
