Jalpaiguri, 27th March: The traditional ‘Baruni Mela’ of North Bengal commenced on Thursday in Gaurihat, adjacent to Jalpaiguri city. The eight-day fair witnessed a large gathering from the morning, with devotees taking a holy dip in the Karala River and offering puja.
This year marks the 86th edition of the fair, organized by the Gaurihat Mela Committee and Gaurihat Unnayan Samiti. The fair features various shops, a giant wheel, and entertainment for children. Devotees from distant places visit the fair for the sacred ‘Baruni Snan.’
According to the fair committee, arrangements have been made for bathing ghats, changing rooms, and overnight stays for visiting saints. Additionally, CCTV cameras have been installed for security, and numerous volunteers have been deployed. With the growing number of devotees, the committee expects around fifty thousand people to participate in the ‘Baruni Snan.’
