New Jalpaiguri, 28th November: The redevelopment of New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station is underway, aiming to transform it into a world-class facility. Darjeeling BJP MP Raju Bista visited the site on Friday to review the ongoing work, accompanied by Dabgram-Fulbari MLA Sikha Chatterjee.
MP Bista said that more than 50% of the construction work has already been completed, and the entire project is expected to be finished within two years. The upgraded station will feature modern infrastructure to enhance passenger convenience, with several facilities becoming operational by March 2026.
Originally, ₹334 crore was allocated for the redevelopment, but due to additional electrification and other infrastructure requirements, the Rail Ministry increased the project cost to ₹475 crore.
Apart from NJP, new buildings and infrastructure improvements are also being implemented for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Currently, around 60,000 passengers use NJP daily, and MP Bista said this number is expected to double once modernization is complete.
He also discussed local issues, including waste management, poor roads, and disorganized surroundings near the station, assuring that repairs and improvements would be carried out without any corruption.
MP Bista further stated that the alternative to Coronation Bridge demand has been fulfilled, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will soon begin construction following the tender process. Targeting the Trinamool Congress, he said that while they only make promises, the BJP delivers on its commitments.
