NJP Dry port case: Seven accused presented in Jalpaiguri court, prime instigator Prasenjit Roy still at large

Siliguri, 06th February: Prasenjit Roy, the prime accused of instigating violence at the dry port in NJP, is still at large. However, the police have managed to arrest Roy’s seven closest associates, on Friday morning, including Sushanta Das alias Babu, Haribishu Sharma and Ram Mahato.


Reportedly, a special team of the NJP police station conducted a search operation for Prasenjit Roy from Malbazar to Oodlabari. While Roy was nowhere to be found, the police were successful in nabbing four more of his close associates. They have been identified as Sujit Ghosh, Sajal Sinha, Sanjay Debnath and Bimal Mandal.

It is to be noted that the INTTUC workers, on Thursday, staged a protest in front of the land port gate demanding recruitment of local workers. They alleged that the port authorities are running the facility by hiring dump-trucks and workers from outside. The protesters demanded the company to engage local trucks and drivers in cargo operations. As no step was taken, the INTTUC staged a protest. 


The protest took a violent turn and the dry port offices, the Customs, vehicles, equipment worth crores were destroyed. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was at Uttar Kanya, instructed the police and local TMC leaders to look into the matter and arrest all involved the violence. Since the CM’s directive, the prime accused Prasenjit Roy is absconding. 

Police are still campaigning continuously to nab Prasenjit. On the other hand, the seven accused were produced in the Jalpaiguri court today. Police have arrested 13 people in this case so far.
