Siliguri, 23rd April: The newborn baby, who was stolen from the maternity department of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, has been recovered safely after three days and was reunited with the mother. The child was found in Balrampur under Chopra in the Uttar Dinajpur district, and two women have been arrested in connection with the case. The accused have been identified as Sita Das and her daughter, Anju Das.
The incident had caused a stir in the hospital premises, and there was a lot of pressure on the Medical College Superintendent Sanjay Mallick as well as the Siliguri Metropolitan police to find the missing child. The investigation began with the help of CCTV footage, and the accused woman was identified from the blurry image captured in the camera. It was discovered that the woman had booked a private bus ticket from the Junction to Chopra.
A special team comprising policemen from SOG, DD, Matigara, and Medical Out Post of Siliguri Metropolitan was formed, which left for Chopra last night. The newborn child was rescued during the operation, and both accused were arrested in the case. Today, the mother-daughter duo was presented in the Siliguri court, and the police demanded a 7-day police remand.
ADCP Subhendra Kumar of Siliguri Metropolitan Police said that the newborn child was stolen from NBMCH on Thursday, and was later traced with the help of CCTV footage and the bus ticket. The child has been handed over to the mother, and the police have started further investigations by taking both the accused on remand.
