Kharibari, 23rd November: After remaining in a dilapidated state for nearly 10 years and despite repeated appeals to various departments, the long-damaged culvert in Buraganj’s Fulbari Tea Garden area at Chakkarmari village is finally being rebuilt by the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad.
According to locals, two rivers flow on both sides of Chakkarmari village. Rising river water had washed away the old culvert, causing years of hardship for residents.
Now, with the initiative of the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad and funding from the Backward Classes Welfare Department, the new culvert will be constructed at a cost of ₹15,40,000.
On Sunday, Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad Karmadhyaksha Kishori Mohan Singh laid the foundation stone of the project. Present at the event were Kharibari Panchayat Samiti member Pradip Mishra, Buraganj Gram Panchayat Pradhan Anita Roy and others.
Kishori Mohan Singh said villagers had long suffered due to the damaged culvert. Work begins today, and the construction is expected to be completed before the monsoon.
Resident expressed happiness as the long-awaited project finally began.
