Murder accused commits suicide at Siliguri Special Correctional Home

Siliguri, 15th May: A murder accused allegedly committed suicide inside the Siliguri Special Correctional Home in Bagrakote on Thursday morning. The deceased, identified as Sri Krishna Mahanto of Tikiapara, was in custody for the past three months for the brutal murder of his mother.


According to sources, Mahanto was accused of strangling his mother, Manju Mahanto, with a plastic rope on 7th February in Ward No. 20 of Siliguri Municipal Corporation. He was arrested by Siliguri police and presented before the court the following day, where he was remanded to judicial custody and lodged in the Bagrakote facility.

On Thursday morning, Mahanto reportedly went to the washroom, where he was later found hanging from a noose made from a bag cord. Correctional home authorities discovered the body and informed higher officials. In the presence of a magistrate, the body was taken down and sent for post-mortem examination.


Santosh Sarkar, speaking over the phone, confirmed the incident and stated that an internal inquiry will be conducted. The case hearing was being conducted through videoconferencing during his time in custody.
