Naxalbari, 09th July: A tragic incident occurred in the Maniram Jote area of Naxalbari when a mother and daughter drowned while crossing the Mechi River on their way back from planting paddy. The mother was rescued, but the daughter remains missing.
Reportedly, on Tuesday morning, a group of 15-20 people crossed the Mechi River, located on the India-Nepal border, to plant paddy. While returning home after their work, the mother and daughter were swept away by the river’s strong currents.
Local residents promptly responded to the emergency, managing to rescue the mother. However, despite their efforts, there has been no trace of the daughter. Rescue operations by the locals have been ongoing since the incident.
Upon receiving the news, officials including the Naxalbari BDO, Maniram Gram Panchayat Pradhan, Naxalbari police, and SSB jawans reached the scene. GP Pradhan Gautam Ghosh confirmed that the rescue operation is still underway.
