Bagdogra, 03rd April: The prime accused in the Mothabari protest incident, Mofakkerul Islam, was arrested by the state CID from Bagdogra Airport on Friday morning. Another associate, Akramul Bagani, was also detained along with him.
According to sources, Mofakkerul Islam had been absconding since the incident and a warrant had been issued against him. Acting on inputs, the CID traced him to Bagdogra Airport, where he was apprehended. He was reportedly planning to flee to Bengaluru.
After the arrest, both were taken to Bagdogra police station, following which the CID team transported Mofakkerul Islam to Malda for further investigation.
Before being taken to Malda, the accused claimed that protests regarding removal of voters from the electoral roll would continue and that he would stand by the cause. He also stated that he was not involved in the incident, referring to a Facebook Live video he had made earlier, which was later deleted.
