Missing youth’s body found in Teesta Canal in Phansidewa on wedding day, family alleges murder

Phansidewa, 21st February: A wave of shock spread after the body of missing youth Shivam Palit was recovered from the lock gate of Teesta Canal in Jhamaklal Jote, Phansidewa, on Thursday night.


According to reports, Shivam was in a relationship with a girl and was set to marry her on Thursday as per social customs. However, on February 17, a dispute arose between the two regarding wedding shopping, after which he went missing. His family searched for him but, failing to locate him, lodged a missing complaint at the police station on February 18.

During the search, his scooty was first found near Fulbari Teesta Canal, and later, his body was recovered from the lock gate in Phansidewa. Deep injury marks were found on his legs and the back of his head. The family has alleged that he was murdered and his body was thrown into the canal.


The body has been sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) for postmortem, and police have launched an investigation.

Shivam’s uncle, Prafulla Bhowmik, stated that the dispute over wedding shopping occurred on Monday, and since then, Shivam had been untraceable. He suspects foul play and has demanded a thorough police investigation into the incident.
