Siliguri, 25th January: State Tourism Minister Goutam Deb met the family of Niranjan Roy, who was trampled to death by an elephant on January 14.
On Monday morning, the Minister visited Roy’s house in Shivnagar village under Dabgram No. 01 Gram Panchayat and interacted with the mourning family. He expressed his condolences and assured to stay by their side in the coming days.
Roy was killed in an elephant attack on January 14. Besides, a herd of elephants also damaged their house. Minister Goutam Deb maintained that the state government will pay compensation of 3 lakh 56 thousand rupees to the affected family, out of which, 56 thousand rupees have already been granted. A house and restrooms are likely to be constructed on behalf of the state government.
On the other hand, the forest department handed over 50 thousand rupees to Niranjan Roy’s family as compensation and a member of the family will be provided with a job.
The Minister further said that several families in the area are residing on forest lands. The work of giving land leases to those families will commence soon.
