Mayor holds meeting to address accident issues on Siliguri’s Eastern Bypass

Siliguri, 28th January: With frequent accidents occurring on Siliguri’s Eastern Bypass, Mayor Gautam Deb of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation convened a meeting on Tuesday to find a solution to the problem.

The stretch has witnessed repeated accidents, including one on Monday night. Protests by the public and opposition BJP have taken place at various times regarding the issue. In response, the Municipal Corporation has decided to take permanent measures to address the issue.

Mayor Gautam Deb and Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar held discussions with DCP (Traffic) Biswa Chand Thakur, along with officials from the PWD and Power Department, focusing on traffic management and accident prevention measures for the bypass.

The mayor highlighted that poor lighting, traffic lights, and oversized road dividers are major contributors to the accidents. He assured that malfunctioning lights on electric poles would be fixed immediately as a temporary measure. Additionally, larger-than-needed dividers, identified as accident-prone spots, will be resized.

An on-site inspection of the Eastern Bypass is scheduled for January 30, following which further action will be undertaken to enhance safety on the road.
