Siliguri, 29th January: Mayor Gautam Deb on Thursday inspected the site earmarked for the installation of the statue of Bir Chila Roy at the 2.5 Mile checkpost area in Siliguri. The initiative is being undertaken by the Kamta Cultural Society with the support of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
Present during the inspection were Ward No. 41 Councillor Shivika Mittal, Ward No. 42 Councillor Shobha Subba, Borough No. 5 Chairperson Pritikana Biswas, and members of the Kamta Cultural Society. The initiative has been described as a matter of pride for the Rajbanshi community of Siliguri and surrounding areas.
It was announced that the foundation ceremony (bhoomi pujan) for the statue installation will be held on 1st February, on the occasion of Magh Purnima, marking the birth anniversary of Bir Chila Roy, at the 2.5 Mile checkpost area.
Kamta Cultural Society member Sanjit Roy said that for the past two years they had been in continuous contact with Ward No. 41 Councillor Shivika Mittal regarding the demand for installing a statue of Bir Chila Roy in Siliguri, and that they received full cooperation from the beginning. He added that with the initiative of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, the work for installing the statue in the checkpost area is now set to begin.
Ward No. 41 councillor Shivika Mittal said that after long efforts, this marks an important success towards the installation of the statue of Bir Chila Roy, a figure of pride for the Rajbanshi community.
