Many residents of Darjeeling district stranded in Afghanistan safely land at Bagdogra Airport

Siliguri, 23rd August: Around 200 people from the Darjeeling district were reported to be stranded in Afghanistan earlier. Acting promptly, the Indian government commenced the operation to rescue Indian nationals trapped in Afghanistan.

With the initiative of the government and the Indian Airforce, numerous residents hailing from the Darjeeling district arrived at Bagdogra Airport on Monday morning.

One such survivor, Rajesh Thapa, exchanged a few words with our correspondent after landing at the airport. Thapa, a resident of Darjeeling, said that he was working as a security guard in Kabul for many years.

“We are grateful for the way the government and Indian Airforce arranged for our safe return. We would’ve died of starvation if we hadn’t been evacuated on time,” Thapa said. “Everyone in Afghanistan is living in fear. The Taliban are moving around with weapons,” he added.
