Man commits suicide after assault in Siliguri; 4 arrested for abetment

Siliguri, 13th September: A man committed suicide in the aftermath of an assault and subsequent humiliation in the area near Ashighar More, Eastern Bypass of Siliguri.


The police from the Ashighar Outpost have arrested four individuals, identified as Junaid Alam (27), Sudeep Roy (22), Sanju Roy (25), and Harka Bahadur Dewan (38), on charges of abetment to suicide. All four are residents of the Ashighar Outpost area.

It is to be noted that the the incident occurred on the night of September 11, when Hemant Roy, a driver by profession, was allegedly attacked by several people. Roy was reportedly beaten severely, stripped of his clothes, and robbed of his mobile phone and money. Following the assault, police rescued him and transported him to the hospital.


Later, unable to cope with the humiliation, Roy allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself near his home. The family and neighbors subsequently took him to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH), where he was pronounced dead by the doctors on duty.

On Thursday morning, the deceased’s family filed a complaint at the Ashighar Outpost. Following the post-mortem examination in the afternoon, residents staged a roadblock near Ashighar More in protest. Police from Ashighar Outpost and Bhakti Nagar police station intervened to restore order.

Reportedly, based on the family’s complaint, the police arrested the four suspects on Thursday night. They were presented before the Jalpaiguri court on Friday. The police continue to investigate the case to determine if additional individuals were involved in the incident.
