Siliguri, 13th December: NJP police arrested a man in possession of a country-made pistol and live ammunition from the More Bazar Railway Quarters area under Ward No. 34 of Siliguri on Saturday.
The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammad Anwar, a resident of the Goala Basti area near Jhankar More in Siliguri.
According to police sources, NJP police received specific intelligence that a man was roaming in the More Bazar Railway Quarters area carrying a firearm.
Acting on the tip-off, a police team rushed to the spot and detained the suspect. During a search, police recovered a country-made pistol and one live round of ammunition from his possession.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted that he had brought the firearm and ammunition to the area with the intention of selling them. He was subsequently arrested by the police.
The accused will be produced before a Jalpaiguri court on Sunday. Police have launched an investigation to trace the source of the firearm and ammunition and to identify possible links with organised crime.
