Man arrested in Siliguri for alleged involvement in wife’s death

Siliguri, 07th January: The Pradhan Nagar police have arrested a man on charges of murdering his wife. The accused, identified as Dhiraj Rai, is originally from Sikkim and had been residing in Siliguri due to work.


According to sources, on January 3, the body of a woman named Deepa Sharma was found hanging from a noose inside her home in the Pabitra Nagar area of Ward No. 46 under the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. The police sent the body for post-mortem following the discovery.

The next day, the victim’s elder sister, Durga Sharma, lodged a complaint at the Pradhan Nagar Police Station accusing her brother-in-law, Dhiraj Rai, of involvement in the case. Durga alleged that her sister had married Dhiraj six years ago, and the couple had a four-year-old son. She claimed that Dhiraj had been regularly abusing her sister both mentally and physically after their marriage, especially when intoxicated. Durga further alleged that Dhiraj had beaten her sister on the night of the incident and staged the death to look like a suicide.


Following Durga Sharma’s complaint, the police arrested Dhiraj Rai, and he was produced in Siliguri Court on Tuesday.
