Siliguri, 09th April: In a distressing incident, the Bhakti Nagar police have arrested a man named Gopal Mandal on the charge of raping his would-be daughter-in-law in Siliguri.
According to reports, the incident occurred on April 03. Local residents stated that the victim is a minor and has no one from her maternal family.
It is alleged that taking advantage of an empty house, Gopal Mandal forcefully sexually assaulted the minor girl twice and threatened her not to disclose the matter to anyone. However, the incident came to light on Tuesday, following which local people assaulted the accused.
Upon receiving the news, police personnel from Bhakti Nagar police station reached the spot and arrested the accused. On Wednesday, he was produced before the Jalpaiguri court.
In his defence, Gopal Mandal stated that the truth will come out after the medical examination. Meanwhile, his wife stated that their son had a love marriage with the minor, who has been living in their house for the past year. She added that she was not present at home during the time of the incident, and if her husband is guilty, he should be punished.
Notably, local residents reiterated that the victim is a minor, unmarried, and has no family. Though she has been staying at Gopal Mandal’s house for a year, the accused and his wife claim that she married their son a year ago. The complete details of the case will only be revealed after further investigation, which is currently underway.
