Siliguri, 12th September: In a recent incident, a man’s suicide following severe humiliation and assault has triggered significant tension in the area near the Eastern Bypass, Ashighar More. In protest of the incident, local residents blocked the road with the deceased’s body on Thursday.
As per details received, the deceased, identified as Hemant Roy, a driver by profession, was allegedly attacked by several individuals in the Eastern Bypass area on Wednesday night. Roy was reportedly beaten, stripped of his clothes, and robbed of his mobile phone and money. After the incident, police rescued him and took him to the hospital. He was later discharged and returned home.
Unable to cope with the humiliation, Roy allegedly committed suicide near his house. His family and neighbors rushed him to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH), where he was declared dead by the attending doctors.
On Thursday morning, the family lodged a complaint at Ashighar Outpost. After the post-mortem, local residents carried the body and organized a road blockade at Ashighar More in protest.
Police from Ashighar Outpost and Bhakti Nagar police station arrived at the scene to manage the situation. A scuffle ensued between the protesters and the police before the blockade was lifted. An investigation is underway to identify those involved in the assault.
