Man allegedly beaten to death over refusal to pay ‘Dadagiri Tax’ in Siliguri; residents demand arrest of accused

Siliguri, 02nd November: A shocking incident has come to light in Siliguri’s NJP area, where a 58-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death for refusing to pay a so-called ‘Dadagiri tax.’ The deceased, identified as Mohammad Johri, was reportedly attacked by a group of youths in front of his home in Rajaholi on Friday afternoon.


According to reports, the youths had demanded a sum of Rs 500 from Johri. When he refused to comply, an argument ensued, escalating into a violent clash between Johri’s family members and the youths. In the altercation, Johri sustained serious injuries.

He was immediately rushed to Siliguri District Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The victim’s family has alleged that the attackers are local residents known for engaging in ‘Dadagiri’ (high-handedness) and extortion activities in the neighborhood.


In the aftermath of the incident, a group of local residents gathered at the office of Ward No. 35 Councillor Shampa Nandi on Saturday morning, filing numerous complaints and calling for immediate action against the accused.

Additionally, police forces have since been deployed in the area to maintain peace and prevent further unrest.
