Siliguri, 09th April: A man who had been absconding after allegedly killing his wife in Siliguri was arrested by police from Malda. The incident was reported from Shiv Mandir’s Haler Matha area under Matigara Police Station.
According to police sources, the accused, Anindo Banerjee, allegedly strangled his wife, Debolina Banerjee, and suffocated her with a pillow. The victim was a school teacher, while the accused is reportedly a bank employee.
Police sources stated that Banerjee himself had called them and confessed to the crime, informing them that his wife’s body was lying inside their residence. Acting on the information, officers reached the spot and recovered the body wrapped in a blanket from a four-storey building.
After committing the crime, the accused fled with their child and remained on the run. A search operation was launched, and he was eventually apprehended from Malda and brought to Matigara Police Station.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a domestic dispute may have led to the murder, though the exact motive is yet to be ascertained. Police have registered a case against the accused on charges of murder and initiated a detailed probe.
The accused was produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court, where he was remanded to police custody for further interrogation. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
