Siliguri, 15th December: Matigara police have arrested one of the two accused in the suicide case of a young woman in Siliguri after seven months. The accused, Anil Kumar (40), is the brother-in-law of the deceased woman’s lover.
According to reports, the young woman was in a relationship with a youth named Om Chandra Yadav. It is alleged that lover Om Chandra Yadav had physical relations with the woman under the promise of marriage. However, when the woman’s family talked about marriage to Yadav’s family, they demanded ₹40 lakh in cash and land as dowry from the woman’s family.
Upon refusal to fulfill the demand, Yadav’s family refused to proceed with the marriage. It is alleged that Om Chandra Yadav and his brother-in-law Anil Kumar had allegedly threatened the woman several times. Due to this, the young woman was mentally broken. On May 30, the young woman committed suicide by hanging herself at her own house.
Following her death, the woman’s bereaved mother filed a written complaint at Matigara police station against Om Chandra Yadav and Anil Kumar, accusing them of abetting suicide and unfaithfulness. Subsequently, the Matigara police arrested Anil Kumar Yadav in the case of the young woman’s suicide, from Samastipur, Bihar on December 14 after about 7 months and brought him to Siliguri earlier on Sunday.
Later, the accused was produced in the Siliguri court, where the judge ordered that the accused Anil Kumar be kept in judicial custody for 14 days. At the same time, Om Chandra Yadav is still absconding. The police are currently investigating further to trace the accused.
