News desk: The Lok Sabha has put forward a novel proposal that recommends restricting the number of guests attending weddings to only 100 individuals, with a maximum of ten servings of food per event. Once the bill is passed, this new legislation will be implemented across the country. The primary objective behind this bill is to curtail unnecessary expenses associated with weddings, thereby allowing the saved money to be utilized more effectively.
Traditional cultural weddings are often characterized by grand gatherings, a multitude of guests, and lavish feasts, incurring exorbitant costs for arrangements. Many individuals struggle to bear these expenses, while some even resort to mortgaging their properties to meet the financial burden. Unfortunately, such lavishness also leads to significant wastage of food and other resources due to the surplus.
In an effort to address this issue and promote responsible expenditure, Punjab Congress MP Jasbir Singh Gill introduced the ‘Prevention of Wasteful Expenditure on Special Occasions Bill’ in the Lok Sabha in 2020. The proposed bill aims to limit the number of guests at weddings and regulate the quantity of food served, thereby curbing the burden of extravagant costs associated with such events.
