Rajganj, 24th January: Local residents have raised concerns about the poor quality of work in a section of the Karatoya-Talma irrigation canal, which was recently constructed.
According to reports, a portion of the canal had collapsed in a stream of water about five months ago in the Saheb Para area of Binnaguri Gram Panchayat, Rajganj block. The reconstruction work was completed a month ago at an estimated cost of ₹18 lakh. However, two days ago, several parts of the newly constructed canal collapsed when water was released through it.
Locals have expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that several thousand farmers rely on the water from this irrigation canal for their livelihood. They noted that parts of the canal had collapsed earlier, and despite the recent construction, some sections gave way when water was released. The residents have alleged that low-quality materials were used in the work.
In response, Binnaguri Gram Panchayat Pradhan Samijuddin Ahmed assured that he would personally inspect the area. He acknowledged the potential losses farmers could face if the canal breaks again during the farming season and promised to take appropriate action after consulting with the concerned department.
