Siliguri, 15th November: Tension erupted in Hatiadanga under Dabgram II area after locals caught a woman and a youth accused of duping people on the pretext of arranging loans. The incident took place on Friday night, when the residents detained the duo and assaulted them before police intervened.
According to local sources, the woman lives in a rented house in Siliguri’s Ward No. 36, while the youth is a resident of Ghogomali. The two had allegedly taken several lakhs of rupees from multiple people, promising to secure loans for them.
Recently, locals grew suspicious and began monitoring their activities. When the duo was spotted in the area on Friday night, residents detained and thrashed them before informing the police.
Police from Ashighar outpost reached the spot, rescued the two and took them to the station. Later, residents filed a written complaint at Ashighar Outpost, leading to the arrest of both accused. The duo was produced before Jalpaiguri court on Saturday.
Locals demanded that their money be returned as soon as possible and urged police to identify others involved in the alleged fraud and take strict action.
