Left women and youth organization resort to protest following hurdles while submitting memo at SMC

Siliguri, 07th May: Left demonstrators encountered hurdles while attempting to submit a memorandum to the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), prompting the left women and youth organizations from Darjeeling district to stage a sit-in protest on the streets.

Reportedly, the protest was aimed at supporting various demands including access to drinking water. During this, the protesters rallied for the resignation of Municipal Corporation MMIC Kamal Aggarwal, and the appointment of doctors at Matri Sadan.

Upon attempting to enter the Municipal Corporation premises, the demonstrators were stopped by police at the gate, leading to a road blockade and inconvenience for school students traveling in buses. Eventually, the protest was called off out of consideration for the students, with the memorandum later submitted at the Municipal Corporation gate.

Representatives from the Left Women’s Organization, including Madhumita Dey, and the Youth Organization, represented by Joint Secretary Shubhadeb Bhattacharya, voiced their frustration at the gate closure and cautioned of potential future actions, should access to the SMC be denied again.
